A brief history of theatre

Join Face to Face as they go on a whirlwind tour through the history of theatre. Time being short, they can only cover a limited number of theatrical ages. The teacher’s pack is split into two parts. The first part, for teachers, offers a brief introduction to each theatrical age that is covered in the show as well as the tapescripts of the extracts to be found on the CD. The second part of the pack is directed at students and includes games and activities based on the extracts in the show.

Cavemen: How did man entertain himself back in the days when there were no stages let

alone cinema and televison?

The Greeks: The first true theatrical tradition was born in Greece 2500 years ago. Tragedies

were at its its core with major themes being love, death and revenge.

Shakespeare: Probably the greatest playwright of all time, Shakespeare lived in England in the

16th century. He wrote comedies, tragedies and history plays.

Musicals: One of the greatest 20th century theatrical genres, musicals have been playing

to packed houses for years. West Side Story, Cats or Phantom of the Opera are

just a few of the classic musicals of all time.

BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS – GREEN DAY

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a song by the American punk rock band Green Day. It was released as the second single from their seventh album, American Idiot.

Green Day was part of the California punk scene. The band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Billie, bassist and backing vocalist Mike, drummer Tré, and guitarist and backing vocalist Jason. Billie and Mike, childhood friends, formed their first band, Sweet Children, when they were 14 years old. In 1989 two more people joined them, and changed their name to Green Day. Since then they have released eleven albums and have been very successful. They are one of the world's best-selling groups of all time, having sold over 75 million albums worldwide.

The song speaks from the point of view of American Idiot's main character, Jesus of Suburbia, and is characterized by its somber and bleak lyrics. It talks about the loneliness of the main character, who hopes to find the love of his life. He has always felt alone and lost, and wish that someone makes him feel loved. He walks a lonely road on the Boulevard of Broken dreams, but this is a metaphor to describe the sorrow and sadness in his life. He feels so alone that his shadow is the only one that walks beside him. The song was the ninth biggest selling single of the 2000-2009 decade, with worldwide sales exceeding 5 million copies. It won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. In response to Hurricane Katrina and the popularity of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Green Day donated all of the iTunes profits from this song for the year to the American Red Cross for Katrina aid efforts.

The award-winning music video for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, shows the band members after their car has broken down in the desert, and they begin a melancholy walk down a dusty road. Some scenes are taken from Los Angeles, and show homeless people and other miserable sights. Special techniques are used to achieve the aged look of the "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" video, damaging the negative. The video of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" won six awards at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2005, most notably for Video of the Year.

I like this song because it remembers me going in the car with my parents on Christmas holiday. Those were very happy moments. I was about ten years old, so my English wasn’t good enough to understand the lyrics of the song. However, I liked its catchy rhythm. Seven years later I understand the song and I see the sadness of the lyrics, but it makes me feel happy instead.

Teresa and Paloma made a beautiful presentation of James Bunt´s song "Your´re beautiful". We love this tune, which has a great story behind.

James Hillier Blount, most known as James Blunt, was born on 22nd of February of 1974 in Tidworth. James is an English singer-song writer and he became famous in 2005 with his first album called “Back to Bedlam” and his single “You’re beautiful”, the one that I have chosen to speak about.

His musical style is a mix of different musical genres in which are included pop, rock and folk. In 2007, he presented his second album called “All the Lost Souls” and he got the “Gold Record” in the first week from the launch.

Before starting his musical career, he had served in the British Army as an oficial of the Life Guards regiment and he had also taken part, in 1999, in the OTAN in Kosovo.

In 2007, “You’re Beautiful” received three Grammy’s prices as the Best Song, the Best

I have chosen this song because it brings me lots of remembers from my trip to England this summer, not because it’s his most famous single. It also helps me to relax myself when I’m too stressed and I really like the lyrics, although I accept that they’re quite sad and a little negative.

James Blunt wrote this song in 2004 thinking of his ex-girlfriend. They broke up and after all, she went with another man. The lyrics of the song tells about the feelings of the singer when, once, he saw her with her new boyfriend.

As a curiosity, the videoclip was filmed in Mallorca, where James has been living for many years.

I also like another singles of James Blunt such as: “1973”, “Stay the night”, “Goodbye my Lover”…and so on. He’s a very good singer and he still has a huge career ahead.
